Teaching Philosophy
The purpose of foundation study is to facilitate the growth of every student, based on their individual needs, by teaching fundamental techniques, materials, and essential art principles. My teaching is based on observation, and drawing from life. I introduce the elements of design and composition, form, construction, perspective, value, color, with traditional and contemporary methods. Utilizing demonstrations and presentations, students are introduced to concepts and methods appropriate to their foundations studies.
It is my goal to foster enthusiasm for fine arts, and improve student’s artistic achievements, by blending foundation principles of art and design with student-centered content. I encourage students to reflect on their lives, interests, and recognize the content in their work. Development of a critical eye with respect to the traditions of art is emphasized. Each student is assisted in time management and studio organization, to maximize his or her success. Extended assistance, clear assignments, and syllabi is provided to students, and professional practices are introduced.
In sharing how to grow as an artist and the process of becoming a professional, I arrange appropriate guests, bringing into the classroom gallery professionals, working artists, curators, and other relevant speakers.
I enjoy collaborating and working with other faculty on curriculum and my knowledge of fine arts and visual communication is valuable in the class room. A professional and collaborative association of passionate educators assists in developing quality teaching and curriculum development that ultimately benefits students. I feel a solid foundation in the elements of art and design offers creative resources for students, to understand essential methodologies and concepts that undoubtedly will carry over into their professional art practice.
